Three Keys To Success When Bootstrapping A Startup | George Bradt

To bootstrap a startup successfully you must:

Provide a valuable benefit;

Communicate that benefit to those that need it; and

Manage your cash flow.

If you do those three things well, your chances of success soar. If you miss any one of the three, you have no chance of success. None. Give up. Quit now and get a real job. While these are true with any startup, what's different about bootstrapping is that you must do them with extremely limited resources.

Provide a valuable benefit

The benefit you provide others is the heart of your business. No one cares what you do. All they care about is what you do for them. This is about turning inputs into product or service outputs that someone else values. But if they don't solve someone's problem better than their alternate choices, you don't have a business.

Aytekin Tank, who bootstrapped the startup of online workplace forms builder JotForm, had been helping writers and editors create forms. He noticed that there were "lots of people looking for web forms" and no one had systematized it -- until Aytekin. He suggests:

Choose products over services. (You can scale products; but service delivery is constrained by the deliverers' time.)

Focus on your strengths. (Don't try to get good at everything. Instead, hire others or partner with others who are good at the things you're not good at.)

Communication

If you build it they won't come -- until you let them know about it. Just having a great benefit is not enough. You must invest to generate awareness and interest and turn that into sales. This requires clarity around your message and engaging in an ongoing series of iterative conversations.

Having decided that StubHub's 25 percent fee to trade event tickets was way too high, Brett Goldberg created a more efficient market with better information on TickPick. The site grades different available seating options has no hidden fees and makes transactions simple.

Affordable marketing was hard. Since StubHub's fees were higher they could always outbid TickPick for things like Google Ad Words. So Brett turned to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and blogging, explaining different seating options at events. Now about 25 percent of the people that read his blog end up interacting with TickPick in one way or another.

Brett has had a lot of success with SEO by putting things like "cheapest Seahawks" tickets on their page headlines. But he (and Google) know that the value of SEO will decline as app interconnectivity increases. Think in-app referrals instead of in-app purchases -- all bypassing search engines, thus TickPick's shift in focus to their mobile app

Cash.

Cash is the oxygen of commerce. You must get your business cash flow positive or have an alternate source of cash before you run out. It comes down to cash in, cash out and how the two sync up.

Note that some cash is more expensive than you think. Tom Foster does a nice job of explaining some of the pros and cons of bootstrapping versus getting venture funding in his Inc. article. Outside money gives you breathing room at the start and allows you to move faster. But you must deal with the loss of control.

Aytekin didn't take outside money to avoid having to go too fast.

I prefer to keep the vision and plans to myself instead of put them in the hands of an investor who might decide on something different.

On the other side, Aytekin keeps his monthly burn rate down and won't hire anyone until he has a full-year of their salary in the bank. Aytekin won't spend what he hasn't earned, has all the equity, no debt and sleeps well at night.

Bootstrappers have to embrace simplicity. Deliver a real benefit. Communicate it relentlessly. Manage your cash. These are the three keys to successfully bootstrapping a startup -- and running most businesses.

So Far, So Good | Michael L. Berman

What comes after eight? Well, it's the number 10, if you work for Microsoft. That's what the Boys from Redmond are calling their new version of Windows, apparently wanting to distance themselves from the dreaded Windows 8 syndrome.

We've been playing with the Windows 10 Technical Preview for about a month and, so far, we like what we see.

The Start Menu has returned with a few enhancements that will satisfy Windows 8 haters and lovers of the much maligned Metro interface that substituted a page full of tiles for the more familiar list of programs. Now we have the best of both worlds - - - a list of programs and apps running down the left side of the menu and a few small tiles on the right. Those users that can't live without the Metro interface just need to change this option, telling the system to boot to their favorite interface.

The tiles are customizable and can be reformatted to any size you want. Also, programs and apps can be dragged from the list to the tile section and a new tile will be created.

Another new feature we really like is the Notifications Tab. All notifications, including error messages and email alerts, are easily accessed by clicking on an icon on the bottom left side of the desktop. There's also a new Task View Tab that shows you what programs are running.

Those of us that were frustrated with Win 8 can now run newer applications (which were designated by tiles) in windows that can be reduced in size, taking a step back to the flexibility of Windows 7 and its predecessors.

It's also a hair faster than Win 8, but this could be because we have yet to play with the complete operating system. Hopefully it won't be a memory and resources hog when it's ready for prime time.

Other new features include:

The Charms Menu is gone for those of us using keyboards and mice

Windows 10 will be a universal interface for all Windows devices including phones, tablets, PCs laptops and the Xbox One

You can access frequently used files and recently used programs through File Explorer

A Battery Saver (for laptop and phone users) and Data Sense App monitor drains on the battery -- and help you deal with them -- and data usage

Future builds of the Technical Preview (there have been two since Oct. 1) may include a new two-step verification system to keep cyber thieves from accessing your files and a more robust version of Windows Defender.

We were told that we might lose some of our files when we installed the upgrade, but -- so far -- everything is where it's supposed to be and running without a hitch. This could be due to the fact that we upgraded from Windows 8.1, so it may be a problem for users of older versions of the operating system.

The folks at Microsoft are warning users not to install the Win 10 Technical Preview on their main computers or computers that they rely on for work. The system, they say, is still a bit "buggy" as they experiment with new features that may or may not work. In fact they often prompt us to see how we feel about certain features and to monitor how well they are working on our PCs.

This, they hope, will result in a much more stable product when it's released in mid-2015.

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Google Inc (GOOGL.O) is in talks to buy Bangalore-based mobile advertising venture InMobi, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said, which could pave the way for what could be the U.S. company's first deal in India's busy start-up space,

InMobi helps companies target the users of phones and mobile devices in their advertising. It was launched in 2007 and says it has more than 1 billion users across 200 countries. It counts Japan's SoftBank (9984.T), an early backer of China's Alibaba (BABA.N), and venture capital firm Sherpalo among investors.

The source, who asked not to be named because Google and InMobi have not made the negotiations public, said talks were at an early stage. The source said Google had not yet detailed its terms and conditions for the deal.

Both InMobi and Google declined to comment.

The source said the two sides were negotiating over issues that included how many unique users InMobi has, a key to its value.

"They are ironing out issues on what InMobi's parameters are, and whether it matches Google's," the source said, adding that InMobi would likely be valued at around $1 billion.

Google Capital, the group's investment arm, has set up shop in India's Silicon Valley, but the parent company has yet to invest directly in the country's Internet and e-commerce sector.

"Advertising is a big revenue generator for Google. As people move from browser or desktop searches, mobile advertising is becoming more important," Neil Shah, an analyst at Counterpoint Technology Market Research, said.

Google has bought mobile advertising company AdMob for $750 million, getting a green light in 2010 after months of negotiations with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

In February, InMobi said 43 percent of its users were in North America and Western Europe, while the Asia Pacific region made up 38 percent.

In India, the vast majority of Indian Internet users access the web through their phones. There were more than 240 million mobile Internet users in India at the end of 2014, according to Shah at Counterpoint Research.

Okay. It's Monday march towards certain markets in New York are open the big number this morning 59 billion dollars. So that's a lot of cash out west startups last year. And it's the most since the dot com era fifteen years ago Bachmann. Two from research firm pitch book data. All kinds of investors individuals venture capitalists in the mutual funds are in on the game setting by visions of cup is like Hoover snapped chat soaring. Globe when I'm Dan Butler in New York. So the money is poured into these start ups but there is bubble talk it is building as the tech heavy NASDAQ is once again topping 5000. Here's shed some light on air cast and Yahoo! finance on Monday morning Aaron good morning to you. Good morning it appears listened to a lot of its communities start ups there all kinds of investors we just talked about there why is that such an appetite out there. Right well it's interesting that this is happening at a time when there are fewer companies coming public and they are coming public at a much later stage. So for big investors. The mutual funds especially. Whereas in the past they would invest in these companies when they became public view to the beginning in the IPO. Now they're seeing that these companies like your movers out their air BB. Yet this was fifteen years ago this companies would have been public along time ago but they're still prided so this is the only way for investors to you get a piece of that action is to invest in them. At private come they it as private companies. That is driving up valuations of the private companies to near record levels where. Even though the nasdaq's back at 5000 or near to it the valuations of the NASDAQ are nowhere near where they that where they were 1989 and 2000 so I it's two different markets that are going on right now. OK so but Britain but going back to why like business not that's the interest the over the world are subject to get this popularity that. Is that the Russian island behind why you got hedge funds mutual funds even pay a premium on these. Yeah that that is the rationales and also look these are very fast growing companies. I mean a snaps that there was a lot of chatter about there they were valued at fifteen billion dollars annually is funding round and he said well that's not that's gotta be crazy that the bubble. But if you look into the numbers of snaps that they have over a hundred million users. They're growing very fast and it's a very young audiences it's the audience that marketers and advertisers have always wanted to get. And we're willing to pay a premium for so if you had that captive audience and it's there's not that many places out there in a world where people are so fragmented how they consume. Content in media. Where you have a big chunk of the we know they're engaged and it's a growing market so you you could make a case that the valuation makes sense and you can do that for a lot of these startups. Lake maneuver or air BB as well so that has are legitimate concern about a possible bubble forming and then consequently us thing. Yeah there there isn't what again when making distinction between a bubble in the public markets like we saw in 2000 and a bubble in the private markets. That may be we're seeing right now you had mark you've been. Reading about this a couple weeks ago you have bit the head of black comedy in which the bigs start up funder in the Dow placing valuations are getting out of control market Dreessen Hughes what is probably the premier. Victor capitalist talking about valuations getting attic and shall begin its in the private markets. And so most of us as investors. Aren't exposed. Although as you mentioned some these mutual fund companies like fidelity in T. Rowe Price. Are investing in these start up so you might have exposure to them. And not know it. But it's not the same thing as in 1990 and 2000 and everybody your grandmother your. Your sister your cousin were all owning these tech stocks to you it's not the same kind of thing program kind took. Is there all the difference in the fact that these actual companies that are getting all the hype and excitement there are actually making money. We that that's another thank you for missing that's another big difference between. The the quota Pope mobile companies that today vs those of 1999 in 2000 when companies were literally being valued on eyeballs. And that they weren't even close to making money. These company a lot of these companies that movers of the world snapped that. Are generating tremendous that the revenue and have a clear path to profitability. If they're not already there. Again that is why some people say these valuations are seen. For the highest than for them for the biggest companies the ones we don't know about it sort of the next tier and it's or below that and again these are still private companies where people went to what these valuations don't make sense. It's aren't. Good to now Eric test round of finance at a Monday morning at thank you appreciate it. You give her latest headlines right here at abcnews.com you've been watching the big number I'm Dan that's where anymore.

Linguastat Secures Patent for Natural Language Artificial Intelligence Technology

Patented AI Technology Bridges Gap Between Natural Language Processing, Machine Understanding and Natural Language Generation; Strengthens Company's IP Portfolio

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Mar 11, 2015) - Linguastat, a leader in natural language processing (NLP) and natural language generation (NLG) artificial intelligence (AI), today announced that it has received a patent for its natural language AI technology. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued patent Number 8,977,953 on March 10, 2015 for "Customizing Information by Combining Pair of Annotation from at Least Two Different Documents." Linguastat's technology detailed in the patent bridges a gap between NLP, machine understanding and NLG by allowing computers to automatically read, understand and write original stories about data scattered across disparate sources. The new patent expands the company's IP portfolio, which includes a second patent issued for systems and methods for identifying the product claims associated with electronic text, and several pending applications.

"During the past several weeks, there has been significant buzz about robots generating news stories and artificial intelligence providing everything from copywriting to marketing data analysis," said John Pierre, CEO of Linguastat. "Our technology extends the benefits of AI for marketing automation beyond those previously written about, and has been proven in a variety of applications ranging from the U.S. military and public health, to digital media and ecommerce. Unlike licensed solutions, we have built our technology from the ground-up, and this new patent strengthens our IP portfolio and will further accelerate our commercialization efforts going forward."

The new patent outlines a broad range of methods related to reading, indexing, synthesizing and transforming information from disparate/multiple sources of information in such a way that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Linguastat's patent details the process of extracting and transforming information from two or more documents into original human-readable text using NLG. This allows computers to learn about new facts and relationships that are only apparent by "connecting the dots" among facts found in many different sources.

Pierre added, "We are the only company using NLG to solve one of the biggest problems in e-commerce, creating optimized, original and engaging stories about products to drive transactions. However, any business that needs to engage consumers can leverage our AI to automate the process of creating personalized content about their products and services on a broad scale."

About Linguastat

Linguastat is a privately held company with an extraordinarily scalable service, built on advanced technology originally developed for U.S. military intelligence and converted for the business to consumer market. Retailers, brands, and agencies rely on Linguastat's patented, algorithm-based suite of services to optimize their data feeds for digital marketing programs and to create and manage their dynamic product descriptions and other rich content for web, mobile, and tablet channels. The Linguastat technology has unmatched ability to automatically transform data into millions of optimized and monetized descriptions and stories for all channels. Google Fiber: Here's What the Hype Is All About

When Google announced today it is bringing its high-speed Internet service to a handful of cities in the southeastern United States, residents of the areas went into full-on celebration mode.

Google's gigabit Internet service is coming to the Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham metro areas, covering a total of 18 cities.

While Google did not immediately say when the service would be ready for customers in the newly announced areas, it didn't stop people from salivating over the idea of Internet service that Google claims is up to 100 times faster than basic broadband.

Movies can be downloaded in as fast as two minutes, while Google said the high-speed service could help make advances in science and business.

With competitive prices, Google Fiber has also been able to entice some users to switch. The company charges $70 per month for Internet service and $120 for a television and Internet bundle in its the Kansas City market.

"New research from the Fiber to the Home Council shows gigabit networks are contributing billions of dollars in economic growth," Dennis Kish, vice president of Google Fiber, said in a blog post today, referring to the nonprofit group dedicated to bringing fiber-optic Internet to more customers.

"Communities across America are demanding more speed for their own homes and businesses, and we're going to keep doing our part to help," Kish added.

Google said it expects to have updates later this year at the possibility of bringing Fiber to more cities. Those in the running include Phoenix; Salt Lake City; San Jose, California; Portland, Oregon; and San Antonio.

Fighting cancer and Ebola with nanoparticles

Story highlights

Scientists in the U.S. are applying nanotechnology research to the battle against cancer and Ebola

Man-made nanostructures would attach themselves to viruses or cancerous cells, nullifying them

Nanostructured surfaces are already in use for medical conditions and implants, reducing the risk of infection

From targeted remedies such as monoclonal antibodies to surgery, cancer has still managed to elude a treatment that discretely and separately attacks it alone.

Nanotechnologies, however - the manipulation of matter at a molecular and even atomic scale to penetrate living cells -- are holding out the promise of opening a new front against deadly conditions from cancer to Ebola.

According to Dr Thomas Webster, the chair of chemical engineering at Northeastern University in Boston, research into medical nanotechnology is gaining pace and the medical establishment is starting to sit up and pay attention.

At the core of the technology is the ability to attach drugs, and in some cases metals and minerals, to nanoparticles that would then bind themselves to life threatening cancer cells or viruses.

Star technology

In one study, Dr Webster's team is developing methods to attach gold nanoparticles to cancer cells.

Infrared light would then heat up the nanoparticles, killing the cancer cells with heat but leaving the healthy cells alive to do their job.

"This technology has been studied for the better part of a decade, but we're looking at ways of making it better," Dr Webster told CNN. "One that we've created in the lab we've called 'nanostars.'

"A star shape has a lot more surface area, so they can kill cancer cells faster than a nanosphere because they heat up faster.

"Even if it's carrying a drug, a star has a lot more surface area on which to attach it -- it's got a different morphology."

Strength from selenium

Nevertheless, problems of toxicity, and in particular how organs like the kidneys and liver expels these nanoparticles after they've been used, is the subject of medical investigation.

Dr Webster said that research into nanoparticle selenium -- an essential trace mineral in the human diet -- as a nano-scaled tool in the fight against cancer was the latest avenue of study.

"Selenium is a natural part of our diet, but we've made nanoparticles of selenium that we're seeing -- in the same way as we've seen with gold and infrared -- having the ability to kill cancer cells and kill bacteria and at the same time not have any toxicity problems you might see with anti-bacterials like silver."

While it has yet to be used in human trials, animal tests have shown promising results. Finding natural agents that can be easily absorbed by the body was the next step for nanoparticle therapies.

"A lot of researchers in biomaterials and cancer treatment are getting very excited by this healthy approach. It's almost like the approach in Eastern medicine, where we're looking for natural nanomaterials, not synthetic ones, like gold and silver," Dr Webster said.

Ultimately, he said, nanotechnologies are likely to be used in conjunction with already available therapies, such as antibiotics, to better target medicines.

Nano future

While nanoparticle technology still has many years of research ahead of it, nanostructured surfaces are already becoming part of the medical firmament.

"These are being approved by the Food and Drug Administration and we're seeing better bone growth, better tissue growth and we're seeing the ability to decrease infection using these materials."

These developments, he said, were helping patients in the here and now.

"What we're using with this is the same materials that we are implanting today -- so titantium for hip implants, polyvinyl chloride for catheters, silicone for breast implants.

"We're doing a lot of work with putting nanofeatures on materials that could stop cancers from coming back."

One successful area, he said, had been the implanting of nanofeatures on catheters; a common vehicle of infection where catheters are often reused.

"We're taking what's currently being used, we take it off the shelf, we then figure out a way to put nanofeatures on there and we see significant improvements.

"It's a wonderful way to give an immediate solution to nanomedicine; so that the public, scientists and clinicians can see how nanomedicine can help patients today, not 10 years down the road."

Sensing a breakthrough

One area where nanotechnology is shaping up as a medical game changer is in the area of medical sensors. Dr Webster said research into getting early warning of problems with implants was a rich field for nanotechnology experts. He plans to present his research as a member of the American Anatomists Association at the Experimental Biology Conference 2015 on March 28-31.

While he said development stopped short of the plot of the speculative fiction novel "Prey" by Michael Crichton, where nano-robots roamed through patients autonomously hunting down medical problems, he said that nanomaterials on implants that could control biological events was not far away.

"We are just on the edge of a whole big effort in terms of developing sensors out of nanomaterials that can do that," he said.

"The smaller the material the more you will not adversely affect the events you're trying to measure. I think this is where this technology shows real promise -- there will be sensors on vascular stents, pacemakers, hip implants."

Google cuts another 1,200 Motorola jobs

motorola mobility headquarters Google announced layoffs of another 10% of Motorola's staff.

The new job cuts represent 10% of the struggling mobile device maker's staff.

"These cuts are a continuation of the reductions we announced last summer," a Google spokeswoman said in a statement. "It's obviously very hard for the employees concerned, and we are committed to helping them through this difficult transition."

Google (GOOG) has preached patience in its turnaround effort of Motorola. When the search giant completed its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola in May 2012, it inherited a product pipeline of about 18 months. That means Google hasn't yet been able to release Motorola-branded smartphones of its own design.

Meanwhile, Motorola's mobile business continues to bleed red ink. It lost $353 million in the fourth quarter of 2012, and Google's Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette has said he expects Motorola's financial results will be volatile "for quite awhile."

Google has made some progress in restructuring Motorola. It sold Motorola's cable box division for $2.4 billion in December, and it has outsourced much of Motorola's manufacturing business.

Shares of Google fell slightly on the news. But the stock is up 17% so far this year and hit an all-time high on Wednesday.

Why You Might Not Have to Fear Robots

Visions of robot wars and an apocalyptic future dominate imaginations.

Billionaire futurist Elon Musk tweeted last weekend that artificial intelligence could be more dangerous than nuclear weapons.

While it's a scary thought, Vlad Sejnoha, the chief technology officer with Nuance Communications, a company that works with artificial intelligence, said he's an "optimist."

"I am skeptical this amping up of the fear factor of when it comes to artificial intelligence," he told ABC News.

"If you look at the history of technology, we have been subject to immense changes," Sejnoha said. "Life would be unrecognizable to a lot of folks who came before us."

Sejnoha shared three ways artificial intelligence is already working to help, not hurt humans.

Get What You Want, Now

Whether its driving directions, movie reviews or scheduling a time for the cable guy to come by -- getting the information you want takes several steps.

Why not leave it to an artificially intelligent machine?

"One simple idea is you cut through that clutter with simple spoken requests," Sejnoha said.

"You should be able to do that across lots of different devices," he said. "You could look up a sports score while driving in the car and when you drive home you can tell the TV to turn that exact game on. It could also become your agent to controlling other smart things."

The bottom line:

"I think we will have the ability to transact with our surroundings but also get information in very seamless ways," he said.

They Care About Your Health

There are artificially intelligent systems already being used by doctors, Sejnoha said.

"We're making it possible for doctors to take notes or document the patient encounters, putting those facts into electronic health records and then helping the doctor provide quality care by noticing discrepancies."

An Artificially Intelligent Friend

The movie "Her," showed the deep emotional bond a man developed with Samantha, his personal operating system. It's a scenario that isn't inconceivable in real life, to an extent, Sejnoha said.

"A lot of users form a bond with their virtual assistants. I think its entirely plausible some folks might view them as a companion," he said. "As we build more and more intelligent systems that can perform more sophisticated tasks, the question is: Should we make them human-like or neutral software tools? There is an argument being made to emulate some human characteristics."

Paralyzed Mice Walk Again - ABC News

Samuel Stupp has a bunch of mice that used to drag their hind legs behind them when they crawled around his Illinois lab, but they have miraculously regained at least partial use of their rear legs.

Astonishingly, their severed spinal cords have been repaired, at least partly, without surgery or drugs.

All it took was a simple injection of a liquid containing tiny molecular structures developed by Stupp and his colleagues at Northwestern University. Six weeks later, the mice were able to walk again. They don't have their former agility, but their injuries should have left them paralyzed for life.

Stupp is on the cutting edge of one of the most exciting fields in medical research: regenerative medicine. If he and others in the field are on the right track, one of these days tragic diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's will be a thing of the past. And the crippled will walk again as the human body repairs itself in ways that it cannot do today.

Preliminary results with lab animals have been encouraging, but what works for mice and rats frequently does not work for humans. But if it does, medicine will enter a new era.

Solution: Think Small

Stupp's team concentrates on combining the incredibly small world of nanotechnology with biology, creating molecules that self-assemble into large molecular structures that can literally "hug" around cells in the human body. That allows them to take charge of key cells present in the body and dictate how they will perform, or, in the case of stem cells, what they will become.

That's a slightly different approach than others in the field are following. Researchers at the University of Michigan, for example, are making "nano particles" that are thousands of times smaller than a single cell. They are small enough to slip through tiny openings in a cell, potentially delivering cancer-killing drugs directly to a damaged cell.

James R. Baker, who runs the university's nanotechnology institute, calls it the "nanotechnology equivalent of a Trojan horse."

Compared to Baker's horse, Stupp's molecular structures are huge, although still too small to be seen with the unaided eye.

'Glial' Cells Key to the Nervous System

The mice in Stupp's lab can move about better these days because the designer molecules attacked the precise reason why a spinal cord is unable to heal itself. When the cord is severed, glial cells in the body create a scar called a "glial scar."

"The scar appears within weeks after the injury and this basically paralyzes the patient forever," Stupp said. "The scar is like a physical blockade that prevents axons from regenerating and growing."

Axons are fibers that extend out from nerve cells and attach to other cells, thus allowing the brain to command the body to carry out its functions, like moving its legs. Stem cells present in the body that have not yet developed into a specialized cell should be able to differentiate into new neurons, thus making regeneration possible, but often the stem cells become glial cells instead, making recovery that much more difficult by reinforcing the "blockade."

A couple of years ago, Stupp said, his team discovered that it could pack its nanostructure with a biological signal that commands the stem cells to turn into neurons, not glial cells. The same signal, he said, orders the axons to grow.

And that's just what Stupp and his colleagues found when they dissected the damaged spinal column in some of the mice.
